Abstract

This compendium is an international account of diseases of crisphead, romaine or cos, butterhead, and leaf lettuce (all types of Lactuca sativa L.) and provides practical guidelines for their control. The compendium should be useful to plant pathologists, crop production specialists, growers, diagnostic clinicians, students, regulatory agents, crop consultants, educators, researchers, extension personnel, and others interested in the diagnosis or management of lettuce diseases throughout the world. The compendium describes infectious diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, nematodes, viruses, and a phytoplasma and noninfectious disorders such as air pollution, allelopathy, bolting, mineral deficiencies and toxicities, pesticide-related injury, rib blight, tipburn, and many others. It discusses insects as vectors of viruses and phytoplasmas. The description of each disease includes a general overview of its importance and world distribution, symptoms, casual organism or agent, disease cycle and epidemiology, control, and selected references. Control measures stress general principals and cultural practices that apply to most lettuce-growing areas and are unlikely to become obsolete. Local extension agents or crop-protection specialists should be consulted for specific recommendations on pesticides. Selected references are listed for each disease to enable readers to find more detailed information as needed.
